St. Lawrence University celebrates 50 years of field hockey

CANTON — It was a historic day at North Country Field at Hall-Leet Stadium on Sept. 7.

Multiple important St. Lawrence University field hockey alumni and builders were on hand to celebrate the team's 50th anniversary.

"It was an amazing weekend, filled with memories, fun, family and love," said head coach Fran Grembowicz. "We are so grateful to the alumni who returned to help us celebrate this remarkable milestone for St. Lawrence field hockey.  Also in attendance were families of some of our alumni who also shared memories of trekking to SLU for many years.

"A shout-out to the three alumni who spoke so elegantly and were so inspirational, Jeannie Weissman '90, Tonki Reidy Downs '96, and Seager Philpot Fischer '07," Grembowicz continued. "The thread running through all their words were fond memories, lifelong friends, relationships, resilience, team, expectations and GRIT."

Grembowicz also thanked St. Lawrence University Laurentian Advancement, particularly Joe Keniston and Marianna Locke, for hosting this memorial event.

The program held a celebration to honor the past and present of the program, including a pre-game luncheon and on-field ceremony, followed by a post-game banquet.

An array of features awaited guests, including displays mounted in the Legends of Appleton Room highlighting the accomplishments of the program's past, and a slideshow presentation led by head coach Fran Grembowicz.

On the field, the Saints delivered for their crowd of alumni, as they took a 4-1 win over Oswego away from the contest. Caroline Hamilton, Maddy Shaw, Charlotte Lehr and Maja Helmer scored for St. Lawrence in the decisive victory.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING

"It was wonderful to visit Canton, I hadn't visited campus since 2012, and it was nice to see it from the lens as an adult compared to as a kid. There were so many good memories to look back on and so many wonderful memories were made this past weekend. Those four years playing for Fran were very special and honestly were the most instrumental in becoming an adult." – Eliza Matthews Gleason '07

"I attended the lunch and game with my 12-year-old daughter and she loved watching the Saints play a great game. It was well worth driving over four hours each way to see some old friends, connect to other alumni, be on the field again, and watch the Saints ring the bell after their win. My daughter is only in eighth grade, but after this weekend, she's dreaming of playing field hockey in college one day – and maybe even at St. Lawrence!" – Elizabeth Keyes Duffy '06

"I came up to St. Lawrence this past weekend to celebrate 50 years of field hockey and it was so special. What an incredible legacy that Dottie Hall and Fran Grembowicz have created! Meeting the current team and families brought me back to my years on the team. I also had an older sister that went through the program and I was fortunate to meet another family who also have had sisters play for Fran." – Erin Mellow '07

"One of the most incredible moments for me was standing in the circle with the team/as a team, sending the pulse around, and the cheer: 'She who has the will to win cannot be beat.' Incredible! I have not been a part of that circle in 35 years. I was immediately brought back to my team then and struck by how I felt part of the circle that Saturday. That is the thread that weaves us all together across time and place. – Jeannie Weissman '90
