Calling hours will be held also on Monday from 11:00am to 1:30pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home.

Joseph Paul Moore, AKA “Big Joe,” left this world on June 24, 2024, holding the hand of his wife of 56 years, Darlene. He passed on the same way he lived his life…stubborn and having the last word.

Born on November 07, 1946, to Earnest and Alberta Moore, Big Joe was known for his inappropriate sense of humor, but maintained the biggest of hearts.

The most important part of Big Joe’s life was most certainly his family…his wife, Darlene; daughter, Denise Tallman; a son and daughter-in-law, Bryan & April Moore; granddaughters, Megan & Logan (Rachel Warczok) Tallman, Alexandra Moore (Ethan Dillon), grandsons, Tristan Moore (Sara LaFave) & Noah Moore (Maria McCaffrey); great-grandchildren, Gage & Alivia; sister-in-laws, Donna Moore, Barb Lomas (Lew Fertig); brother-in-law, Michael (Nicole) Sovie; cousins, Carol Anne Moore (Tom Brandow); along with many nieces and nephews. Oh yeah, Bucko (the dog).

Joe was predeceased by his parents, Earnest & Alberta (Boyer) Moore; mother-in-law, Faye Sovie; brother, John “Jack” Moore; sisters and brother-in-laws, Anne & Frank Binion; Dorothy & Doug Ahrens; and grandson ,Joseph Leonard Tallman.

Outside of his family, friendship was very important. Notably, the longstanding friendship with Ralph Barley allowed the two to tinker and Big Joe creating more problems for Ralph to repair.

Summer mornings belonged to Kenny Kendall with a quick breakfast and off to the golf course where Kenny allowed Joe to use his foot wedge to gain an advantage.

Morning coffee with John King where the both of them solved the world’s problems and became the best coaches on the planet watching ESPN.

Of Big Joe’s life accomplishments, he held much pride in the 26 years of coaching in Pop Warner Football. Until the day of death, he was able to recall most all the Ogdensburg Community’s youth he had the pleasure to coach. He taught them the mindset he lived by, and that was to never quit and learn each loss was a lesson in life. He was also proud of the memorable Father-Son moments shared while he coached.

Joe and Darlene enjoyed many nights at casinos with their cousins, Carol Anne and Tom. Poker nights at Big Joe’s house were enjoyable and intense.

To the cheerful applauds of most teachers, Joe graduated from Ogdensburg City School District in 1965. Starting at the age of 9, Joe worked as a farmhand with his brother-in-law, Frank. After high school graduation, Joe worked for the Laborer’s Union 322 and finished as a foreman. He worked the remainder of his career at the Ogdensburg Bridge & Port Authority, where his retirement in 2003 could not come quick enough.

Joe was a member with the following fraternal organizations within the Ogdensburg community: Odd Fellow’s, Knights of Columbus, Elk’s Lodge, and the Moose Lodge where he was governor for some years. Also, Joe was a Board Member of the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club, which he always looked forward to volunteering for the Ogdensburg Expo every year.

Big Joe’s family would like to show great appreciation to all of the individuals, neighbors, and family members who assisted with any needs through the last few years of life. A special thanks to John & Lisa Decker for all of their willingness to be at the home with a phone call. Also, the family would like to thank Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Rochester General Hospital, and Hospice for the love and compassion shown towards Joe and his family in the last year of life.

Any donations, in Joe’s name, can be made to the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club.
