John F. "Jack" Tyo, 78, Norfolk

NORFOLK – John F. “Jack” Tyo, 78, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 26, 2024, with his family at his bedside at the Alice Center in Malone.

Jack was born on May 19, 1946, in Massena, the son of Reginald D. and Aletha (Hawkins) Tyo. He graduated from St. Lawrence Central School. He was a custodian at St. Lawrence Central for many years. He married Margaret Cook on October 6, 2001.

He was a member of the Helena Fire Department for over 50 years and took care of the Brasher Ice Rink in Helena for over 40 years. He loved the outdoors, bird watching, hunting or just relaxing, enjoying the sounds of nature. He was a wrestling fan for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, his stepchildren, Travis Phillips (Kristen) and Tina Phillips (Carolynne), four grandchildren, Skyler Cree, Nathan Cree, Jaxson and Evelyn Phillips, his siblings, Judy and Jimmy Durant and Thomas and Donna Tyo, many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Gary and Reginald.
Jack’s family will celebrate his life with a visitation at Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop on Tuesday from 4 to 6 pm.
