CANTON -- Mary W. Goolden, 89, of Old DeKalb Road, Canton died Monday, September 28, 2026, at her home while under the loving care of her family.
Mary was born a daughter to the late Floyd and Goldie (Cota) Wheater in Watertown NY on January 17, 1937.
She graduated from Canton High School in 1954 and attended Canton ATC.
While not caring for her home and the family farm, Mary was employed as a dietary worker for Gouverneur Hospital for 22 years.
She is survived by her three children, Steven (Holley) Goolden of Fairhaven NY, James (Karen) Goolden of Canton NY and Suzanne (Larry) Lavigne of Franklin Falls, NY; 7 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Laura Wheater of Atlanta, Georgia.
She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Dorothy Jones (1960).
Mary was a member of Canton U.M. Church where she sang in the choir.
She lived on the Old DeKalb Road nearly her whole life.
She and her son, Jim, ran the family farm for many years.
Everyone who knew Mary knew she had a love for all animals; especially her beloved Cassie, a chocolate labrador retriever. Mary and Cassie could be seen daily, walking the fields of the family farm.
She was an avid vegetable and flower gardener and especially enjoyed ceramics. As her family grew, she welcomed each and every one with a loving heart and open arms.
A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Canton United Methodist Church.
