CANTON -- It is with sadness that the family of Harold J. Swinwood of Canton announces his passing, shortly after the celebration of his 100th birthday. He died peacefully on Monday, September 02, 2024 surrounded by loved ones.
Harold (Hal) was born August 5, 1924 in Montreal the son of the late Thomas and Freda (Locke) Swinwood. He served in the Canadian Royal Air Force from 1943 to 1946 and later became a U.S. citizen.
He married Frances Patnode on December 27th, 1947 at Notre Dame Church in Malone with Father Morrisette officiating. They were married for over sixty years when Frances predeceased him on October 14, 2009.
Hal was a manager for Singer before owning and operating Malone Sewing Machine and Vacuum Cleaner Supply. He was a member of the American Legion in Malone, loved a good joke, and was an avid baseball and hockey fan.
He enjoyed sharing stories of the Great Depression and had a keen interest in politics and the stock market.
In addition to his beloved wife, Frances, he was predeceased by his parents and sister Dorothy (Murdie) Bickerstaff of Toronto.
He is survived by his son, Rick (Laurie) Swinwood of Canton and daughter Christine Fobare of Potsdam; grandchildren, Corey (Tara) Swinwood of Canton, Vanessa (Sean) Kennedy of Stafford, Virginia, Joshua Fobare of Boston, Bethany (Geoffrey) Vanderwoude of Potsdam and Jesse Fobare of Fishkill and great-grandchildren Nolan and Madeline Swinwood of Canton and Tyler and Ava Kennedy of Virginia; companion, Dorothy Dana of Canton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Massena Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 89 Grove Street, Massena, New York 13662; where Hal had been receiving care.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 11:00-1:00 at the O’Leary Funeral Home in Canton. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1:00. Hal will be laid to rest beside his wife at Evergreen Cemetery in Canton.
