Douglas N. Murray, 66, Hewittville

HEWITTVILLE -- Douglas N. Murray, 66, of River Road, passed away early Sunday morning, June 9, 2024, at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Doug was born December 8, 1957, in Potsdam, the son of the late Richard N. and Gloria (Thomas) Murray and was a 1976 graduate of Potsdam High School.

On March 26, 1983, he married Diane Coffey in Potsdam, she sadly predeceased him on December 20, 1988. He later married Karen Page.

Doug was an equipment operator for the Town of Potsdam Highway Department for many years until his retirement.

He had previously drove truck for Allstate and Adirondack Asphalt. Doug, known to many as the “Mayor of Hewittville,” had a very generous and selfless spirit, one who was always there for someone in need, whether it was family, friend, or stranger it didn’t matter to Doug.

He loved working on his tractor, maintaining his lawn, watching football, cutting wood, and cherished the time he had with his grandchildren.

He was a former member of the Potsdam Moose Lodge, Follensby Pond Hunting Club, and was the original drummer in the “Good Ole Boys” band.

Doug is survived by his children, Justin and Elsie Miller of Davenport, Florida, Julie Murray and fiancé, Phineaus Wagschal of Massena, Tyler Murray of Hampton, Virginia, and Kaitlin Murray of Potsdam; his beloved grandchildren, Grant, Grace, Haley, Noah, Isabella, Keegan, and Logan; his sister, Betsy and Wilcox of Philomath, Oregon; his brother, Rick and Dawn Murray of Athens, Alabama, Jeff and Bonnie Murray of Colton, and Greg and Shelly Murray of Hannawa Falls; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson-Seymour Funeral Home, Potsdam, where friends may call Monday, June 17, 2024, from 4-7:00 PM.

A celebration of life and burial in Bayside Cemetery will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider memorial contributions to be made in his memory to the Potsdam Animal Shelter or Encephalitis International.
