MASSENA - “Community science for all ages” is a free  summer program  being offered by Nature Up North, Indian Creek Nature Center, Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, and the Nicandri Nature Center..

This year’s programs will offer a “Bioblitz” at each site, focusing on helping to build a species profile that can be used in future educational programs.

Participants will find and identify as many species in the given category as they can during each program, using collecting tools like nets and ID aids such as keys, guidebooks, and apps.

 All materials and instruction are provided. All ages and abilities are welcome. Programs are free of charge and no registration is required.

June 29 — “Life in the Forest”: Identify the trees and animals of the forest using guidebooks, nature apps, and your own keen observation skills. The program is offered by Nature Up North  at Wachtmeister Station, 23 Romoda Dr, Canton, from  9 a.m.- noon.

July 13 — “What lives in that water? Pond Life”: Using nets, scoops, binoculars, guidebooks and nature apps, participants will identify life in and around the pond. The program is offered by Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, Canton, from  9 a.m.- noon.

July 27 — “Salamander Saturday”: Search for salamanders and other critters  to identify and catalog in a fun, family friendly hike. The program is offered by Nicandri Nature Center from  9 a.m.- noon.

August 3 — “Life from the Boardwalk”:  Look for birds, identify dragonflies, and scoop in the pond to help identify species in and around the boardwalk. The program is offered by the Indian Creek Nature Center, 770 County Route 14, Rensselaer Falls, from 10 a.m.-noon.
