Darwin F. Phillips, 83, Canton

CANTON -- Darwin F. Phillips, 83, of Canton and formerly of Norwood, died on Sunday, August 18, 2024, at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital after being stricken ill at home. He was surrounded by family. 

Darwin was born December 12, 1940, in Massena, a son to the late Henry and Byo (Lawrence) Phillips.

Darwin graduated from Massena High School and began working. He worked driving truck for Groebler and Phippen Trucking, he worked on the St. Lawrence Seaway project, and construction for Woodward and Colbert’s. He eventually settled with the Econolodge in Massena and worked for several years retiring as Maintenance Supervisor. 

On December 8, 1973, Darwin married the love of his life, Lucille Maria Pecore. The couple made a home and raised four children. Mrs. Phillips predeceased him on July 7, 2018.

Darwin enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, riding snowmobiles and wood working and was an all-around handyman. 

Darwin is survived by two sons, Franklin “Bub” (Bobbie Jean) Phillips, Brian (Jennifer) Phillips, a daughter Tammy (Ross) Wilson, grandchildren, Jerry Disottle Jr., Patience Disottle, Dustin (Savannah) Phillips, Franky Lynn Phillips (Kevin), Austin Phillips (Renee), Alyssa Phillips (Rob), Aiden Donnelly, Aleah Donnelly, Amy Jo Gilbo, Koreena (Justin) Holmes, Troy Wilson (Gabrielle), Conner Wilson, Kayley Phillips (Robert), Cody (Greta) Phillips, Kass Phillips, Courtney Phillips (Micah), Jeremy Gilbo and Tessa Fefee; and a brother, Henry (Jane) Snyder. Also surviving are nine great-grandchildren, a son-in-law, Kevin Donnelly and many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his beloved wife, Lucille and parents, Henry and Byo, Darwin was predeceased by a daughter, Shelly Donnelly, his siblings, Dolan, Yale and Royal Phillips and Mary Lou Mitchell, Vera Snyder and Beverly Bunstone, and a grandson, Chase Baxter. 

Contributions in his memory may be made to a local cancer support or research association. 

Calling hours for Darwin will be held on Monday, August 26, 2024, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Buck Funeral Home in Norwood, followed immediately by a funeral service at 1:00 pm with Rev. Lee Sweeney, officiating.

Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Norwood.
