St. Lawrence University men's hockey program welcomes 11 new players to team

CANTON -- The St. Lawrence University men's hockey program will welcome eleven new players to the team ahead of the 2024-25 season, as announced by Charles W. Appleton II Head Men's Hockey Coach Brent Brekke.

  • Isack Bandu, Reilly Connors, and Chicago Blackhawks' draft pick Dominic Basse will join the Skating Saints as transfers, while eight first-year student-athletes will be infused into the lineup.

Among the newcomers are two goalies, six forwards, and three defensemen.

  • Dominic Basse

Goalie | Alexandria, Va. | St. Cloud State University (NCAA) | Ht: 6'6" Wt: 197 Catches: Left | Draft Rights: Chicago Blackhawks (NHL)

Started his career at Colorado College where he played 2262 minutes across 43 games with a 3.21 goals against average and a .891 save percentage.

While with Colorado, Basse played twice in Appleton Arena against St. Lawrence and made 39 saves.

Transferred to St. Cloud State University where he played the last two seasons. He also played 43 games for the Huskies and posted a 2.55 goals against average, a .903 save percentage, and a 23-14-4 record with six shutouts.

Drafted 167th overall in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft to the Chicago Blackhawks after playing 37 games with the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL.

Brekke on Basse: "A big athletic goalie with tremendous skill. Very talented. His four years of college experience is a great asset, as we have a large group of new faces joining our program this season."

  • Reilly Connors

Forward | Madison, Conn. | Yale Bulldogs (NCAA) | Ht: 6'1" Wt: 200 Shot: Right

Played three seasons for the Yale Bulldogs captaining the team in 2023-24.

Has played 91 collegiate games with the Bulldogs in total and has 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points.

Appeared in 53 games for the Bandits and Pontiacs in the AJHL before playing in 22 games for the Connecticut Jr. Rangers of the NCDC.

Brekke on Connors: "Reilly is a big, strong forward that brings a lot of college experience coming from Yale University, where he was a captain last season. Reilly is a very good two-way player and very versatile as a forward that can play wing or center."

  • Isack Bandu (Junior)Isack Bandu

Defense | Montreal, Québec | Victoria Grizzlies (BCHL) | Ht: 6'2" Wt: 200 Shot: Left

Played three seasons for the Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL. Played in 93 games scoring six goals and tallying 39 assists for 45 points.

Bandu played his first two collegiate seasons in the CCHA with Northern Michigan University.

Transferred to St. Lawrence after appearing in 35 games for the Wildcats.

Tallied five points for Northern Michigan last season with a goal and four assists.

Brekke on Bandu: "He is very mobile and uses his skating ability to win loose pucks and quickly break out. Isack is a solid two-way defenseman."

  • Spencer Bell S

Forward | Warman, Saskatchewan | Humboldt Broncos (SJHL) | Ht: 6'0" Wt: 190 Shot: Right

Started his junior career with the Blackfalds Bulldogs of the AJHL playing in 84 games scoring 20 goals and 26 assists.

Moved to the Humboldt Broncos of the SJHL during the 2022-23 season and played in 26 games to close the season with 16 points.

Played 55 games for the Broncos in 2023-24 and produced offense at will with 47 goals and 41 assists for 88 points.

Brekke on Bell: "Spencer is a pure goal scorer. He has a knack for scoring in many ways and his offensive habits are terrific. He led the SJHL in goals scored and finished second overall in league scoring."

  • Nicholas Beneteau

Forward | Windsor, Ontario | Alberni Valley Bulldogs (BCHL) | Ht: 6'3" Wt: 192 Shot: Right

Played 153 games over three seasons for the Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

Tallied 19 points in his first season with the Bulldogs before posting 56- and 63-point seasons the last two years.

In total, scored 47 goals and had 91 assists for 138 points.

Brekke on Beneteau: "Nick is a talented centerman with size and very good offensive instincts. He was one of the top offensive players in the BCHL last season and we are excited for his impact here at St. Lawrence."

  • Jacob Bernadet

Forward | South Burlington, Vt. | Maine Nordiques (NAHL) | Ht: 5'10" Wt: 170 Shot: Right

Started his junior career with the Islanders Hockey Club of the NCDC scoring 15 times and assisting on eight others in 46 games.

In 2022-23 he played 54 games for the West Kelowna Warriors in the BCHL and had 22 points on 12 goals and 10 assists.

Appeared in 60 games this past season for the Maine Nordiques in the NAHL posting a career-best 54 points on 21 goals and 33 assists.

Brekke on Bernadet: "Jake is a competitive 200-foot player and very good on both sides of the puck. He plays hard and has good skill to complement his competitiveness."

  • Sam Hall

Defense | Oldwick, N.J. | Okotoks Oilers (BCHL) | Ht: 6'2" Wt: 185 Shot: Left

Last played for the Okotoks Oilers of the BCHL, previously of the AJHL.

Played 46 games in the AJHL tallying five goals and 21 assists from the blueline. After transitioning leagues, he played 18 games the rest of the way in the BCHL tallying six assists.

Appeared in 53 games for the Salisbury School before juniors earning 14 points.

Brekke on Hall: "A great transition defenseman who moves very well. His mobility allows him to close in on opposing players quickly to create turnovers. He will look to activate often and join the offensive rush."

  • Evan Orloff

Defense | Bethesda, Md. | Maine Nordiques (NAHL) | Ht: 6'3" Wt: 195 Shot: Left

Last played for the Maine Nordiques of the NAHL where he played for three seasons.

Appeared in 158 games for the Nordiques scoring 22 goals and adding 43 assists from the blueline.

Previously played in the NCDC to start his junior career with the New Jersey Rockets appearing in 40 games.

Brekke on Orloff: "A long body and a steady defenseman. Evan will move pucks and look to join the rush with his strong skating ability."

  • Isaac Tremblay

Forward | Granby, Québec | Vernon Vipers (BCHL) | Ht: 6'1" Wt: 175 Shot: Left

Played the last two seasons for the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL.

Appeared in 104 games scoring 32 goals and adding 31 assists for 63 points.

Had a breakout season a year ago with 23 goals and 16 assists for 39 points.

Brekke on Tremblay: "Isaac is a skilled center that moves well and is very creative. He had an impactful second season for Vernon last year and showed significant growth in his game. He doubled his goal production from his rookie season and led the team in goals scored."

  • Gabe Westling

Forward | Mora, Sweden | Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL) | Ht: 6'4" Wt: 203 Shot: Left

Came to North America ahead of the 2022-23 season to play for the Maryland Black Bears of the NAHL.

 Scored 10 goals and had 16 assists in 42 games in 2022-23.

Went to the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL and played in 37 games scoring eight goals and 11 assists.  

Brekke on Westling: "Gabriel is a big center with very good hockey sense. He has an excellent skill set for a player his size and can play in all situations."

  • Jack Wieneke

Goalie | Plymouth, Minn. | Lone Star Brahmas (NAHL) | Ht: 6'1" Wt: 180 Catches: LeftJack Wieneke

Settled into a prominent role with the Maryland Black Bears in the 2022-23 season going 14-6-1 with a 2.10 goals against and a .905 save percentage.

Went 5-0-0 to start 2023-24 for the Black Bears before moving to the Lone Star Brahmas.

Played in the final 28 games for the Brahmas going 22-2-3 with a 1.39 goals against and a .942 save percentage.

Helped lead the team to their second-ever Robertson Cup title going 5-1-1 in the playoffs and was named to the All-Tournament Team along with being named the NAHL Goaltender of the Year.

Brekke on Wieneke: "Jack had a tremendous season for Lone Star, winning the NAHL championship. So, he knows what it takes to be successful and win a title. He was named the NAHL Goaltender of the Year for his outstanding season."
