HAMMOND – The 6th annual Chippewa Bay Poker Run, "Paddle For a Purpose," is set for Saturday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at Schermerhorn Harbor, rain or shine.
Adults and youth from near and far are invited to paddle around islands and try their hand in poker for pleasure and prizes.
All proceeds benefit local organizations, community projects and individuals in need.
People may sign up at www.VisitHammondNY.com by Aug. 2 too save $5 off registration and get a free t-shirt.
The goal is for entrants to have fun while creating an immediate and positive impact in the community. It is hosted by The Foundation for Community Betterment.
Participants will enjoy a short voyage through a picturesque riverside course from island to island in kayaks, canoes, skiffs, or stand-up paddleboards to collect cards for a poker hand. Prizes will be awarded for the best hands for first, second and third places, including an overnight stay at world-famous Singer Castle.
All paddlers are eligible to win door prizes from local businesses. An awards ceremony, music and food immediately follow at Foster’s Harbor Inn.
This year’s exciting raffle item is a clear-bottom kayak worth over $2,500. Tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10.
Registration can be done at www.visithammondny.com/. Early pre-registration runs thought Aug. 2 at $30 for adults and $20 for youth. That’s a $5 discount from registration after that, and includes an event t-shirt. After then, it will cost $35 for adults and $25 for youth.
Check-in and day-of registration at Schermerhorn Harbor begins at 8 a.m. Paddling and collecting cards is from 9 to 11 a.m. The awards ceremony is at noon at Fosters Harbor Inn.
Single and double seated kayak rentals are available online.
Spectators are welcome, and people who can’t be there can follow the event on the ChippewaBayPokerRun Facebook page.
