In a political world where politicians can sometimes seem to be everywhere you look, this time of year is hallmarked; the closer we get to Nov. 3 the more intense it all becomes. 

I want to offer another perspective on John Michno’s campaign for St. Lawrence County Legislature.

John has never been someone who feels the need to be in everyone’s face. That is simply not who he is. His campaign may not be the loudest or most aggressive, but I believe that is intentional. 

John would rather listen to people than constantly talk at them.

Some candidates choose to campaign by making themselves impossible to miss. John has taken a different approach. He has not gone overboard trying to get attention, and I think that says something about the kind of representative he would strive to be.

For me, public service isn’t supposed to be about who can put up the most signs, send the most mailers, or make the most noise. It should be about listening to the people you represent, understanding the issues facing our communities, and doing the work after the election is over.

John Michno has spent decades working with and serving people in our community. His quiet approach shouldn’t be mistaken for a lack of commitment. Sometimes the person who isn’t screaming the loudest is the person who is actually taking the time to listen.

That is the kind of representation I want to see in District 15.

I encourage voters to look beyond the volume of a campaign and take the time to get to know the person behind it. 

John Michno may not be the candidate you see everywhere — but he is a candidate worth listening to.
