Independence Day to be celebrated around St. Lawrence County

St. Lawrence County will be buzzing with Fourth of July festivities on July 3 and July 4 with fireworks, parades, dancing and demolition derby.

The July 4 holiday tradition in both the Norwood and Morristown communities will continue with a host of events and activities for the whole family.

Here’s a look at what's happening throughout the county.

Norwood

Celebrate Independence in Norwood with two fun-filled days of events featuring fireworks by the Norwood Volunteer Fire Department at dusk on July 4, a demolition derby, block dance, and their annual parade with special performances.

Wednesday, July 3​

Norwood Brass Fireman performing on the Norwood Village Green from 7 to 9 p.m.; Block Dance Party at the fire station parking lot featuring the band Plan B from 9 p.m. to midnight. Hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages, French fries, adult beverages, and soft drinks for purchase. ($2 admission)

Thursday, July 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bounce Houses on the Village Green. 1 wet, 1 dry. ($5 per child for the full day access. $3 per child from 3 p.m. to takedown)

Mountain Express Locomotive Train Rides at the Village Green ($5 ride per person) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Face Painting by Belly Buttons the Clown on the Village Green (with donation) noon to 3 p.m.

Parade begins at 1 p.m. at the Norwood American Legion. Line up begins at the Norwood American Legion and heads north on Outer Maple St., right Spring St., right to S. Main St., left on Bicknell St., right on Morgan St. Floats disband on Whitney St. and the parade will conclude at the Fireman's Field. Parade Theme is  Independence Day; special performances by the Brockville Pipes and Drums, and DownBeat Percussion (The Buffalo Bills' official drumline). Also performing at the Fireman's Field after the parade.

Demolition Derby at 2 p.m. at the Fireman's Field ($4 admission). Food available for purchase by the Norwood Fire Dept. - Hex & Hop beer truck. Registration at the Firemen’s Field from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.; $30 per Derby Car; a Youth Driver Class is available for ages 10-14; anyone participating that is not the driver of the car must pay $4 event admission.

Morristown

Their annual Fireworks Display will highlight the sky on the eve of Independence Day, Wednesday, July 3 at dusk. A parade will be held on July 4 beginning at 10 a.m. starting on Morristown's Main Street, followed by activities at the Fire Station, and a Car Show and Craft Fair on the Ballfield. 

Wednesday, July 3

Gigantic Fireworks Display at dusk; live music by Another Fine Mess (7 to 11 p.m.), concession stand (hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, French fries and ice cold beverages) and local vendors.

There will also be Kids games, games of chance and 50/50 raffle tickets.

Thursday, July 4

The Annual Steve Spilman Memorial 4th of July Parade begins at 10 am. Bands from Gouverneur, Heuvelton, Lisbon, Morristown and Ogdensburg are slated to perform. The parade will begin on Main Street (near the intersection of SH 37) heading downtown, turn right onto Chapman St., disbanding on Golden St.

The following activities to follow the parade at the Fire Station beginning at 11:30 a.m.:

Chicken BBQ ($15), concession stand Kids Games, games of chance 50/50 raffle tickets, a car show and Morristown Fire Department Auxiliary Craft Fair.

Colton

The community living along Higley Flow in Colton will kick off Independence Day with its annual "River of Lights" celebration, children's parade and boat parade.

Wednesday, July 3

River of Lights: 9:15 - 10:30 p.m. Residents living along Higley Flow will light flares along the shore and light up the river. The best view of the lights can be seen from boats on the water.

Thursday, July 4

The annual Children's Parade will step off at the junction of Cottage Road and Arbuckle Pond Road at 10 am. Children and adults wearing patriotic colors and outfits will march up Cottage Road to Gulf Road. Boats following along with the marchers along the shore are encouraged to decorate their boat in honor of July 4.

Hannawa Falls

The 38th annual Robert Plumb Memorial Fireworks will be held on Saturday, July 6 at dusk in Postwood Park. A concession stand will be open throughout the fireworks start, grab some snacks before the show and enjoy the lights reflecting on the Raquette River.

Gouverneur

The Gouverneur Fire Company will host a fireworks display on Wednesday, July 3 at dusk. The 146th annual event will be held at the Gouverneur Fair Grounds with plenty of food vendors on site. Bring a blanket, chairs, tailgate, or view from the seated grandstand area. Donations will be requested at gate entrances. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Personal fireworks and flares are not permitted. Public restrooms at the Fairground will be open in addition to Port-a-Pottys on site.

All North Country residents and visitors are urged to support the local vendors on site, selling pulled pork, Italian sausage, poutine, hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ, pizza, fried dough, fresh cut fries, cotton candy, candy apples, popcorn, cheesecake on a stick, toys, glow sticks, and more. 50-50 tickets available for purchase at the firemen’s tent

If interested in having a spot at the show, please reach out to the Gouverneur Fire Department at 315-287-1537. All vendors need to provide proof of insurance and fee per spot on the grounds.

Cranberry Lake

The Cranberry Boat Club will be hosting their 15th annual Firecracker Race/Walk on Thursday, July 4 starting at the Cranberry Lake Boat Launch at 9 a.m. Races will include a 5K and 10K Run, 5K Walk, and 1 Mile Fun Walk. This is a non-sanctioned race down Columbian Road, where there is little to no traffic.

Day of registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Long Term Parking Lot for the Cranberry Lake Boat Launch. Registration includes a T-shirt and pre-registration is encouraged. Adults (before June 22): $25, Adults (after June 22): $30; Children 12 and Under: $5

The event is sponsored by the Cranberry Lake Boat Club. All profits are donated to the Cranberry Lake Community Improvement Fund that invests in local projects like the Beach Park, Pavilion, Oswegatchie River Walk, Hub, etc.

Potsdam

An American Salute performance by the Orchestra of Northern New York (ONNY), conducted by Michael Colburn, will be held Wednesday, July 3, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall, SUNY Potsdam, 44 Pierrepont Avenue.

Admission is $27 for adults, $24 for Senior/Military/First Responder/Healthcare: $10 for college students, $5 for ages 13-17.

Join Orchestra of Northern New York (ONNY) as it salutes July 4th, thanks active-duty military and veterans with patriotic favorites. This concert also offers wonderful opportunities for you and your family to celebrate America and our freedom as we pay homage to our veterans, and those currently serving our country.
