With high water and fast current, paddlers race down Oswegatchie River

OGDENSBURG — About two dozen paddlers raced down the Oswegatchie River from Heuvelton to Ogdensburg for the Frederic Remington/Rip Friot Canoe Race July 20.

The annual race coincides with the start of the Ogdensburg International Seaway Festival.

The water table was higher than normal, with a faster current making travel faster this year than usual, said organizers.

The race had one short portage around the Eel Weir Dam before reentering the Oswegatchie River.



The tandem kayak with Eileen Visser, of Potsdam, and Roger Gocking, of Saranac Lake, had the fastest time, completing the race with a completion time of 1:18:56.

Solo kayakers Andrea Vogl, of Burlington, VT, came in at 1:28:55; Steven Vogl, of Plattsburgh, completed it in 1:32:26.

Amateur two-person canoeists were: Mary and Allen Kelly, Rensselaer Falls, 1:24:59; Chip and Tony Gianfagna, Watertown/Evans Mills, 1:27:06; Blanche Towne and Chas Billingsley, Potsdam/Saranac Lake, 1:29:12; Brian Watson and Lorraine Tortorro, Watertown, 1:31:40; Rebekah Mills and Brienne Basfore, Saranac Lake/Heuvelton, 1:33:19; Steve Dilger and Aviva Gold, Potsdam, 1:34:19; Will Siegfried and Lyn Short, Potsdam/Canton, 1:35:29.

Stand-up paddle boarder Natasha Ballen, of Pakenham, Ontario, Canada, completed the course with the time of 1:50:37.

Two-person canoeists in the recreational division were Chevelle and Luke Keith, Ogdensburg, finished with a time of 2:34:07.

Recreational solo kayakers were Doug Wilcox, Massena, had a time of 2:22:26 and John Pearson, Ogdensburg, completed the race with a time of 2:22:56.
