MASSENA -- One compressor is down at the Massena Arena but village officials say hockey, figure skating and public skating will go on as planned.

According to Recreation Director Mike McCabe, work is well underway to address the issue.

In correspondence to the village board, McCabe said beginning the rebuild process is crucial to ensure winter sports can continue as scheduled.

"One compressor is down but we have a backup. It should affect things too much but if that other one goes, that means it's all done and we don't have any sports," Trustee Ken McGowan said during the board's Dec. 19 meeting.

Trustee Christine Winston said she was told by McCabe that the compressor likely wouldn't make it through the rest of the season.

The cost to fix the compressor is estimated to be around $24,000 but McCabe told board members he is checking into insurance coverage to see if the rebuild would be covered under the policy.

The insurance company involved is Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. according to village officials.

In a separate action, McCabe put in a request that if the insurance policy does not cover the repairs, $24,000 would be moved from the department's unappropriated fund balance to the arena equipment line item to pay for the repair. Trustees said during the meeting they would have no issue moving the funds.

In other action, trustees also authorized an annual agreement with the Massena Electric Department for the Village of Massena Police Department to receive and transmit emergency calls for and on behalf of the Massena Electric Department during days and hours of day in which the general business office for MED is not open.

The cost of the agreement will be $7,750 to be paid by MED to the village on or before Jan. 31, 2024.

Trustees also approved an agreement for medical services with Mountain Medical Services.

Under the terms of the deal, Mountain Medical Services will provide DOT/CDL physicals, alcohol breath testing, urine drug screens and vaccines for the village of Massena. The contract will run from Jan. 1, 2024 through Dec. 31, 2024.
