CANTON - The Canton Village Board recognized one of the village’s unsung heroes for their outstanding services to the residents of Canton at its monthly meeting on Wednesday night.

Mayor Michael Dalton and village trustees unanimously supported a resolution honoring the Canton Garden Club who are phasing out their gardening services. The garden club has been actively serving the community for more than 100 years.

“They have done a wonderful job but are unfortunately aging out,” the mayor stated. “They have done a lot of good things and have worked very hard at it.”

Dalton noted the village has accepted what money the garden club has and will hire out work to continue beautification work in the village, especially along Main Street.

Deputy Mayor Anna Sorensen added that compliments about the village are often about them.

The resolution says the “Village of Canton is fortunate to be home to a dedicated group of volunteers (the Canton Garden Club) who contribute to the beautification and enhancement of our public spaces.”

It also  says the club has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the beautification of our Village through their tireless efforts in planting and maintaining gardens, urns, and other green spaces.

According to the resolution the Canton Garden Club has planted and maintained the gardens and urns at the Partridge Knoll Golf Course, bringing beauty and natural splendor to this community recreation area.It also credits the club for the care and maintenance of the plantings in the Court Street Park and their dedication extends to the Silas Wright House and Cemetery.

“The Club's most visible contribution is perhaps the beautiful hanging baskets that line Main Street, which have become a signature feature of our Village, admired by residents and visitors and contributing significantly to the charm and character for which Canton is known,” the resolution says.

“The efforts of the Canton Garden Club have not only enhanced the physical beauty of our Village but have also fostered a sense of community pride and contributed to the well-being and quality of life of our residents.”
