CANTON -- St. Lawrence County residents will have the opportunity to recycle unwanted or leftover paint at a free monthly collection offered by St. Lawrence County and PaintCare, a non-profit recycling organization.

The Development Authority of the North Country is assisting with the coordination of the effort.

The take-back collections will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 3 and Nov. 7 at the St. Lawrence County Highway Department, 44 Park Street, Canton.

The following coatings will be accepted at these events, in five-gallon containers or less:

  • Interior and exterior latex, acrylic, water-based, alkyd, oil-based or enamel coatings
  • Deck coatings and floor paints
  • Primers, sealers, undercoaters
  • Stains
  • Shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, single-component urethanes.
  • Waterproofing concrete/masonry/wood sealers and repellants (not tar or bitumen-based)
  • Metal coatings, rust preventatives
  • Field and lawn paints

Paints must be in their original, sealed container with their original labels.

These collections are for residents only. Businesses can reach out to PaintCare directly to arrange for a large-scale pickup of over 100 gallons.

The collected paint will be picked up by PaintCare, a national organization that will then donate the leftover material, recycle it, or use it in landscaping materials (pavers, flower pots) or cement/asphalt blends, or as fuel for cement kilns and incinerators.
