Vernon L. "Spike" Cole, Jr., 75, Potsdam, formerly of Colton

POTSDAM -- Graveside services for Vernon L. “Spike” Cole Jr., a resident of Sisson Road, Potsdam and formerly of Colton, will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, at 11 a.m. in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Colton.

Family and friends may call at the Buck Funeral Home in Colton on Monday, September 23, 2024, from 3-7 p.m.

Spike passed away at his home on September 18, 2024, with family at his side.

Spike is survived by a son, Zac and Michele Cole, Colton; a daughter, Ashley and Johnathan Goodspeed, Potsdam; his beloved five grandchildren, Kallie, Karson, Xander, Parker and Brody; three brothers, Kevin and Paula Cole, Colton; Darrell Cole, Colton and Jeffrey and Grace Cole, Zephyrhills, FL; a sister, Sandra Spoon, Rome and his ex-wife, Rebecca Cole, Potsdam, whom remained close to Spike; a sister-in-law, Christine Cole, Pierrepont as well as several nieces and nephews.

Spike was pre-deceased by his parents, Vernon Sr. and Florence and a brother, Duane Cole and a brother-in-law, Paul Spoon.

Born in Potsdam, NY on January 14, 1949, to the late Vernon and Florence Fisher Cole Sr., Spike graduated from Colton-Pierrepont Central School, Class of 1967.

He attended College and then served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam Conflict, serving from 1968-1970.

Spike worked as an Engineering Technician, Designer and Draftsman for Appleton Papers, Inc., in Newtown Falls, NY for over 20 years and then he worked for St. Lawrence County in Real Property, Canton, NY for over 20 years as well.

In his spare time, Spike enjoyed the outdoors—hunting, fishing and camping, he was an avid softball player for many years and was a member of the Canton VFW.

Spike was also known to take an occasional trip to the casino.
