WADDINGTON -- The United Steelworkers Local 420-A endorsed Waddington Town Supervisor Alex Hammond in his candidacy for this year’s election for New York State Assembly District 116. The union represents workers at Massena Alcoa and Arconic plants.

Hammond is the Democratic nominee for the River District, the 116th NYS Assembly District, running against Republican incumbent Mark Walczyk.

“After review of your outstanding qualifications for this office, The United Steelworkers Local 420-A proudly commits our support and fully endorses your candidacy for NYS Assembly district 116th,” Mark Goodfellow, president of USW Local 420-A, said in an endorsement statement from the Hammond campaign.

“I am honored to have the endorsement of the USW Local 420-A. The Steelworkers has a long history of looking out for the best interest of its members and workers by advocating for wage increases, worker safety, and a fair work week. If elected to the State Assembly, I would always advocate for the best interest of unions so that they are able to properly support the working men and women in our communities. I look forward to working with the USW Local 420-A to protect and further the rights of North Country families,” Hammond said in the campaign statement.

“Among many other labor related issues, the USW stands for its members by advocating for workers rights, wage increases, and safety. Globally, the USW represents 1.2 million members and retirees from diverse trades,” USW said.
