To the Editor:
Trump has poisoned our relationship with Canada for absolutely no economic or diplomatic benefit at all. Travel to the United States for recreation, tourism and shopping still continues for a majority of Canadians. Are Canadian tourists crazy?
Who are the Canadian visitors willing to endanger their liberty by visiting the US? Are they above protections of Habeas Corpus: the right to challenge their detention in person in court. Are they immune to the benefits of Due Process: no person shall be deprived of “life, liberty, or property, without due process of law.”
To travel to the US for any reason from any country is a dangerous gamble indeed. ICE agents and Border Patrol are arresting and jailing people across the US without Habeas Corpus and Due Process, violating laws essential to liberty, justice and democracy. All persons on US soil - citizens, tourists, immigrants- are no longer protected by Habeas Corpus and Due Process of Law guaranteed by the US Constitution.
Smart Canadians are making other plans, standing up to bullying, building new trading partners, boycotting American products and keeping away from a country that no longer safeguards life, liberty or property without Due Process of Law.
The United States Constitution is supposed to apply these legal protections to everyone on US soil regardless of citizenship, nationality or legal status. Choose your next elected officials based on upholding the Constitution as your Right to Due Process and Habeas Corpus will depend on it, as well as any hope of sane Canadians ever returning.
