TAUNY to present new exhibit Aug. 31

CANTON — TAUNY will present the exhibit “Expressions and Interpretations of the North Country: Garments of the Past, Knit into the Future” from fiber artist and artist Mona Zillah opening at the center on August 31 with a reception from 1-3 p.m.

This project was created to inspire public conversations about North Country identity during rapid climate change, a press release from TAUNY said.

Each element in the installation features and elevates environmentally neutral and beneficial textiles whilst recognizing the people and communities that produce these fiber and textiles.

The new designs of handknits, hand & machine sewn garments, including yarns and fiber from local and global sources, are examples of the possibilities for a sustainable wardrobe.

The community-centered Frog House will feature words from your community in a bound book in addition to shared crafts and art pieces from community members, TAUNY said.

The reception will showcase additional art and knit/sewn pieces plus amuse bouche and drinks.

Zillah explores form, with a focus on movement vs stagnation and with elements of belonging, through a variety of mediums including art performance, drawing, painting, fiber, and sculpture.

This project is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
