Massena Volunteer Fire Department launches innovative robotics program to enhance emergency response

MASSENA -- The Massena Volunteer Fire Department has announced the launch of its new robotics program, a cutting-edge initiative designed to improve emergency response capabilities and enhance the safety of both firefighters and the community.

The program will utilize advanced drone technology to assist in various aspects of emergency operations, including search and rescue missions, fire suppression efforts, hazardous material incidents, and disaster management, officials say.

By providing aerial views and real-time data, drones will offer critical support in situations where traditional methods are limited, allowing for more informed decision-making and quicker response times.

"Our new robotics program represents a significant step forward in our ability to serve the Massena community," said Fire Chief Patrick O’Brien.

"This technology will provide our firefighters with the tools they need to assess dangerous situations better, locate individuals in distress, and monitor large-scale events with greater precision."

The robotics program is the result of a community need assessment aimed at determining mission areas where resources are lacking, and placing the latest tools for emergency management in the hands of first responders, officials The fire department has worked closely with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure that the program meets all regulatory standards and best practices for the safe and effective use of drones.

In addition to its emergency response functions, the robotics program will be used for training and educational purposes.

The Massena Volunteer Fire Department plans to collaborate with local schools and community organizations to demonstrate the benefits of drone technology in public safety, officials say. While the program's initial focus is drone technology, the program will remain centered on overall robotics to allow for future expansion and broaden the department's grant funding opportunities.

"We're excited to bring this technology to Massena and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our operations and community," added Chief O’Brien.

"We encourage residents to reach out and learn more about how we are using this new capability to keep them safe.

Community members who have unused drone technology in working order that would like to recycle or dispose of the drone can donate gently used drones to help build Massena Fire Department's drone program.

"Training new operators on simpler systems where skills can translate to higher-end level technology is both a more efficient and cost-effective use of resources," officials say.

Drones can be sent to the following address:

The Massena Fire Department's drone program is set to be fully operational by early Spring of 2025.

Public information sessions and demonstrations of the technology will be held in the months leading up to the launch.
