Swift water rescue team uses lifeboat to aid family stranded by flood in Canton

CANTON – While the stories of destruction throughout the county are plentiful in the wake of Hurricane Debby's wrath, so too are the stories of heroism that have taken place over the past 24 hours.

Dozens of emergency responders including law enforcement, rescue squads, fire departments, volunteers, dispatchers and kind citizens have come together to help out in the wake of massive flooding that has devastated roadways throughout the county. 

Among those stories is the one depicted in photos shared by Canton Fire Department.

Firefighters said that the morning after the storm  started early with a water rescue team aiding a stranded family from a camp near Taylor Park. 

“A swift water rescue team from New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services that was deployed in Canton since last night, responded quickly and removed the occupants from the camp via boat. We are currently at the USH 11 North underpass, assisting the New York State Department of Transportation cleaning the road surface in preparation for inspection and reopening,” a post on social media from the department said.

Across the county an untold number of stories are continuing to be shared as emergency responders work together to clean up the devestation.
