POTSDAM –  Rochester Regional Health’s St. Lawrence team has joined Zachary Johannesson, MD, as its newest emergency medicine team member. He is treating patients at Canton-Potsdam, Gouverneur, and Massena hospitals.

Dr. Johannesson earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA; and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH.

He comes to the St. Lawrence Region with extensive experience in Emergency Medicine, and has presented numerous didactic sessions on his specialty. Dr. Johannesson is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, where he conducted training on battlefield trauma care and received a Certificate of Commendation.

He has been a volunteer with the Harvard Medical School Disaster Medicine Interest Group, the Crimson Care Collaborative: Healthcare for the Homeless, and the St. Mary Health Center in Wilmington, NC.

Dr. Johannesson pointed out there are several reasons why the St. Lawrence Region is a great fit for him.

“My wife is in the United States Army and is stationed at near-by Fort Drum, which is what brought us to the region. However, I grew up in a small town in rural New Hampshire and the community here reminds me a lot of my hometown. After being in large cities for medical school and residency, I'm excited at the prospect of working in a smaller community similar to where I grew up,” Dr. Johannesson said.

As a member of the Emergency team, Dr. Johannesson treats patients with chest pain, numbness, sudden paralysis, seizures, poisoning, severe burns, heavy bleeding, electric shock, deep wounds, and more.
