SUNY Potsdam gearing up for total solar eclipse on April 8

POTSDAM — Various organizations, local government and the region’s universities are already gearing up for the total solar eclipse slated on April 8 and SUNY Potsdam is no exception.

The college plans to rent rooms to visiting umbraphiles who will be in the region to view the celestial event which will culminate perfectly over the North Country in a path of totality.

The rare occurrence will mark the first time Potsdam has ever been in the direct path of a total eclipse and the April 8 event will be the last time the U.S. will see another total eclipse for more than two decades.

The college plans to make some of its spare dorm rooms available from Friday, April 5 until Wednesday, April 10 for those visiting the region for the event.

The rooms, all in Knowles Hall North, will cost $60 per night, in cash or check.

“The amount charged will cover the expenses for the event, including prepping and cleaning the space before and after the event,” said Joshua D. McLear, SUNY Potsdam associate director of residence life.

The rooms will contain the typical dorm furniture, two twin extra long beds, two desks, two closets and access to shared bathrooms on each floor. Those renting must provide their own bedding.

Check out time is noon.

Those interested in a room rental can fill out an application online at http://tinyurl.com/mr3nm7ne .

The application page clarifies that those filling out the online form are not guaranteed a reservation. Confirmation will be emailed out.

Potsdam alumni will be given priority for available rentals, the college said.
