SUNY Canton Roos softball team open season in mid-March, look to play spoiler in NAC West

CANTON — The SUNY Canton softball team will open its 2024 campaign in mid-March as the team competes in their final season in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) under second year Roos Head Coach Gabrielle Rivers.

The team's schedule currently features 36 total contests with 15 home games and 15 conference contests. SUNY Canton will play a three-game series against each of the other five schools in the NAC West. The team is scheduled to open its season on March 22nd with a doubleheader at Houghton. SUNY Canton has been picked to finish fifth in the NAC West in a vote of the division's six head coaches. SUNY Poly was picked to win the division with 35 points and five first-place votes. SUNY Cobleskill was chosen second with 31 points and the other first-place vote, while SUNY Delhi (22), SUNY Morrisville (17) and SUNY Canton (13) rounded out the top five in voting. Defending NAC champion Husson was picked to win the NAC East with six of the seven first-place votes and 47 total points.

The Roos 2024 roster features 15 players with five returners coupled with 10 newcomers. Top returners for Canton include senior infielder Sophia Gundersen who hit .299 with 20 hits, 12 runs, four doubles and 4 RBI a season ago. Priscilla Soule returns for her sophomore season at catcher and infielder after nine hits, eight runs, three doubles, a home run and 9 RBI during her rookie season.

Caitlyn Reed returns as the team's top pitcher earning both the Roos wins last season tossing 89.1 innings with 57 strike outs. At the plate she recorded 12 hits, 10 runs, three doubles and 4 RBI.
