CANTON — St. Lawrence County schools are currently scheduled to start their 2021-22 academic year prior to Labor Day.
The news was announced Thursday night at Canton Central School’s Board of Education meeting.
The school calendar calls for students to return from summer break on Friday, Sept. 3. They would then resume school the Tuesday after Labor Day.
CCS Superintendent Ron Burke said he expected a lot of absenteeism that day due to many families traditionally having plans for the final weekend before school begins.
A Board member asked if the spring break could be shortened to allow for a start date after Labor Day. Burke said that the break cannot be shortened due to legalities about having Good Friday off.
The reason for starting Sept. 3 is mainly tied to BOCES students who are often required to have a certain number of hours of instruction to complete their program or earn a certificate.
The last day of school is scheduled to be June 24.
