Romanian national accused of stealing $112,000 from North Country Savings Bank, identity theft

MASSENA -- A Romanian national accused of multiple felonies in Massena is alleged to have stolen over $112,000 from North Country Savings Bank.

According to court documents, Laurentiu Dragusin, 28, allegedly stole the funds from North Country Savings Bank between Sept. 27 and Sept. 30.

Police say he was charged with grand larceny 2nd: property value in excess of $50,000, a felony.

Police also allege Dragusin committed identity theft 1st: assuming another person's identity and causing financial loss greater than $2,000.

Police say he knowingly and intentionally stole $4,000 from an individual by assuming the personal identification information of the victim, causing a financial loss in excess of $2,000.

That charge is also a felony.

Dragusin is also alleged to have intentionally used the financial identification information of a victim to commit a further crime, grand larceny 3rd, to steal an additional $4,000.

That charge is a misdemeanor, police say.

Dragusin was also charged with a second misdemeanor for possessing a skimmer device, police say.

Police charged him with unlawful possession of a skimmer device 2nd: intent use of identity theft.

Police say Dragusin intentionally, knowingly and unlawfully used a skimmer device with the intent to commit identity theft in the village of Massena.

Massena Police Department Detectives were assisted by the St. Lawrence County District Attorney's Office, St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, Village of Potsdam Police Department, Village of Canton Police Department, Department of Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Police say no further details will be provided at this time.
