Refutes letter about Massena Library issue

To the Editor:

I see Mr. Gray has written in to give up his opinion about the library [April 1, 2024 - More money, same library service, says former Massena town supervisor] . He discusses a raise in taxes and the fact that the library “doesn’t need as much as it gets.” Ahh Joe, I see that you don’t use the library much.

That raise in taxes is spread throughout the school district. The entire school district. Not one person but all people.

He discusses his belief that the library won’t change or improve or expand its services. And how does Joe want them to expand or improve? There is free WiFi, the interlibrary loan, a public place for families, classes, education, and the use of the library for essential things like a public place for visits with kids.

What more does Joe want?

Joe himself offers no facts on the argument against the transition and discusses the area being economically devastated, and that this is even more affected by the library. Joe was the town supervisor for 7 of those economically devastating years, specifically after the 2008 economic depression. What did he do to help? Welp, nothing that lasted. Nadeau’s is shut down again. And where would this money that is not being used on the library go to?

He then states that the library is not independent (true) and when it is that there should be a repayment for money and labor used on the library and that the library “doesn’t need its own custodian.”

The library is a bastion of knowledge and a safe haven. One that is used by everyone without prejudice. Joe would like it to be a business and deny people an ability to advance their education free of charge. Joe does not feel the need for people to educate themselves.

Maybe Joe can learn to be told no as well, like people did when they voted him out.
