Public info session in Canton for residential electricity option

CANTON –  A public information session will be held concerning an electricity supply contract for the village of Canton's community choice aggregation programs.

The CCA programs essentially function like buyers' clubs for residential electricity. A municipality would contract with the firm Joule Community Power to manage each of the CCA programs.

The village board will be reviewing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Joule Power to determine several selections, including product type, term agreement and rate type, noted Deputy Mayor Anna Sorensen at Wednesday night’s monthly board meeting.

A final move, by April 11, would be to give the mayor the authority to finalize pricing.

Joule will host the information sessions which will detail an upcoming bid to consider an electricity contract to supply the CCA members in each community.

The hearing for the Village of Canton will be Wednesday, March 27 at 5:30 p.m. in person at the municipal building boardroom, 60 Main St., in Canton. Those wanting to participate can also join on Zoom at https://bit.ly/can32724 ; or call in to the meeting at (929) 205-6099, with meeting ID 833 8819 7258.

A similar session will be held for the Town of Potsdam on Thursday, March 28 at 6 p.m. at the town hall, 18 Elm St. (Join on Zoom https://bit.ly/pots328 .) or call in at (929) 205-6099 with meeting ID 840 2210 2641.

If either of the municipalities selects a supplier, eligible residents and businesses who are participating in the CCA will receive a letter with their choices and info about how to opt-out if they choose.

For more information about each of the CCA programs visit www.joulecommunitypower.com/potsdamtown or www.joulecommunitypower.com/cantonvillage , or call 888-985-2211.

The Joule Power information session will be followed by a special village board meeting at 6 p.m. in the boardroom at the Canton Municipal Building.

The agenda items include discussion and review of the Joule Power CCA MOU, a benchmark resolution for Clean Energy Communities, and discussion and review of Request for Proposals for the 19 Miner Street project.
