CANTON – The Canton community came together on Saturday, Sept. 12, for the second headstone-cleaning event hosted by the Canton Rotary Club.

Rotary President Donna Sturge provided brief instructions on how to properly and respectfully clean the headstones, based on her training last spring with Nancy Lafaver, the St. Lawrence County Historian.

Canton High School students, Air Force ROTC cadets, and community members joined Rotarians to help preserve a piece of Canton’s history at the Silas Wright Cemetery. Those who helped with the project included Canton High School students Lena Frank, Elle Manno, Addie Ragan, Avery Thacker, ZiZi Metcalf, Ryan Toshuck, Zachary Lyndaker, Finn O’Brian, Malachi Conant; Air Force ROTC cadets Mark Dehoff, Khai Anderson, Boston Reilly, Adam Fransen; community members Lauren, Ena, Coura, Kaya, and Addie Diop, Victoria Jeffries; Canton Rotarians Tom Lee, Wanda Stevenson, Paula Sturge, Donna Sturge, Kathy Mullaney.

Their time and effort help preserve these historic gravestones and an important part of our community’s history.

Canton Rotary plans to hold these events twice a year, as needed, to help restore and preserve the gravestones and bring back their original beauty.
