New semi-pro football team trying to have home games in Potsdam

The North Country Tigers, based in Potsdam, was one of four new teams accepted by the N.F.A. at its annual meeting Jan. 29 Geneva. The Tigers were the only new team not based in the Rochester area.

The Tigers plan to open their season Saturday, June 10, with an inaugural home game against the Southern Tier Diesel. They are in a separate league and will not compete with St. Lawrence County’s other semi-pro team, the Seaway Valley Venom.

The Tigers have made a request to Potsdam Central School to play their home games at the Potsdam High School turf football field, Potsdam Central Athletic Director Mark Wilson said.

Wilson said the school was still waiting for insurance paperwork and other necessary paperwork, but the plan was to allow the team to play if all goes well.

All five regular-season Tiger home games would be scheduled to be played under the lights at 7 p.m.

The Tigers will also have five road games against all other teams in the NFA’s Double A Division. Along with the Diesel, the Tigers’ other conference opponents include North Country regional rival Carthage Revolution, the Ithaca Warriors, the Charlotte Colonials and the Rochester Renegades. The Colonials and Renegades are also new to the Alliance this season.

The 2017 campaign runs from June 10 to Aug. 26, concluding with a home game vs. Ithaca. The Tigers have also been in contact with a West Coast team from Washington State that is interested in coming to Potsdam to fill a bye week in August. The Northern Football Alliance’s 2017 playoffs begin Sept. 9.

The Tigers will sport a bright, bold team look of orange, black and white uniforms, with Tigers’ logo on the chest. Each helmet will also be embossed with a Tiger head logo.

Team owner Cody Jenne of Norwood formed North Country Tigers in the fall. Jenne is a 2016 graduate of SUNY Canton with a major in sports management. He is also a five-year staff member at North Country Sports Net.

“We are excited to bring semi-pro football back to the St. Lawrence Valley region,” said Jenne. “We reached out to players from St. Lawrence, Franklin and northern Jefferson counties, as well southeastern Ontario, Canada. To date, we have at least 53 players signed and committed to playing in our inaugural season.”

The head coach for the Tigers is James Compeau of Massena, who has past semi-pro coaching experience as the defensive coordinator for the former St. Lawrence Valley Trailblazers and assistant coach of the now-defunct Massena Silver and Black.

“We’re going to put in a really fast offense,” said Compeau. “It’s going to be more of a run and shoot. We are going to be using a new tackle style, with fast linebackers and be very diverse.”

Windy DeRushia of Massena will serve as Compeau’s assistant coach and will be the first female assistant coach ever in the Northeastern Football Alliance.

DeRushia has played professional women’s football on the offensive and defensive lines for the Montreal Blitz and the Carolina Queens. She has also served as assistant coach for the Massena Central School modified football team.
