New Open Recreation program gets underway Monday in Canton

CANTON – The first edition of the new Open Recreation program in Canton will kick off Monday with a host of events and activities.

Canton Recreation Director Meghan Richardson released the schedule, along with reminders and rules on Wednesday.

Open Recreation is offered Monday through Friday through Aug. 9 with activities at both the Canton Pavilion and Bend in the River Park. Morning hours are 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.; evening hours 6 to 9 p.m.

Richardson noted there are no age restrictions. General rules include do not hurt yourself, do not hurt someone else, do not damage equipment or facilities with three strikes are out of the program for the entire summer

“This is a drop-in program which allows adults to drop off and pick up children any time they wish,” Richardson previously stated. “Different activities will be set up daily and all you have to do is show up.”

There is no charge to participate and registration is not required. All patrons are asked to check in at the main office at the pavilion then staff will help direct participants to the proper playing areas. All participants under 13 years old are required to be checked in by a parent or guardian.

Featured inside the pavilion will be two pickleball courts that double as badminton courts, a basketball court and cornhole boards.

“We just want to keep it fun. It’s something new and something that will evolve as we go,” she said.

Monday, July 15: Pickleball, cornhole and Giant Jenga from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.; kickball from 8 to 9 a.m.; Open Ball Hockey from 8 to 9:30 a.m.; basketball from 9 to 10 a.m.; Open Box Lacrosse from 9:30 to 11 a.m.; Beach volleyball and Spikeball from 10 to 11 a.m.; badminton, cornhole and Giant Jenga from 6 to 9 p.m.; bridge from 6 to 8 p.m.; basketball from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; and beach volleyball, Spikeball from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Tuesday, July 16: Badminton, cornhole and Giant Jenga from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.; soccer from 8 to 9 a.m.; Open Box Lacrosse from 8 to 9:30 a.m.; basketball from 9 to 10 a.m., Open Ball Hockey from 9:30 to 11 a.m.; beach volleyball and Spikeball from 10 to 11 a.m.; pickleball, cornhole and Giant Jenga from 6 to to 9 p.m.; checkers from 6 to 8 p.m.; beach volleyball and Spikeball from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; Open Box Lacrosse from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; and basketball from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

Wednesday, July 17: Pickleball, cornhole and Giant Jenga from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.; kickball from 8 to 9 a.m.; Open Ball Hockey from 8 to 9:30 a.m.; basketball from 9 to 10 a.m.; senior fitness from 9 to 10 a.m.; Open Box Lacrosse from 9:30 to 11 a.m.; beach volleyball and Spikeball from 10 to 11 a.m.; badminton, cornhole and Giant Jenga from 6 to 9 p.m.; cribbage from 6 to 8 p.m.; basketball from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and beach volleyball and Spikeball from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

For box lacrosse and Ball Hockey, a helmet, protective gloves and athletic sneakers are required and participants must provide their own gear.
