MASSENA -- A donation from the U.S. First Responders Association will enable Massena Fire Department crews to assist pets that are rescued and require oxygen.
In a post on the Village of Massena Permanent Firefighters page, officials announced the department has received a complete Pet Oxygen Mask kit.
Officials said the masks will enable both firefighters and EMTs to care for animals at the scenes of fires.
The news comes just a few months after Massena Fire responded to a house fire in the village that included the rescue of 35 dogs.
All animals were treated at the time with traditional, human oxygen equipment.
"Having equipment specifically tailored to pet and animal needs will make MFD’s job of protecting our residents - and their pets - much safer and easier," the release states.
Fire officials offered thanks to firefighter and EMT Mulvenna for reaching out and obtaining the donation.
