CANTON — Local Living Venture’s Bees & Beekeeping Group will host a workshop on food safety practices for beekeeping operations of all sizes from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 24, in the main classroom at Cornell Cooperative Extension, 2043B State Highway 68.
The workshop, titled “Preserving the Integrity of Your Honey: From Hive to Bottle and Beyond,” is free and open to the public. Voluntary donations are appreciated.
Leading the workshop will be Bob Deemer, regional local pack facility manager for Barkman Honey, a nationwide, family-owned honey packer. Deemer has decades of experience working with beekeepers and organizations focused on horticultural safety. He currently serves as first vice president of the Empire State Honey Producers Association.
Deemer will discuss practices to help maintain honey quality and safety throughout production, harvesting, processing and storage. The presentation will focus on principles similar to those outlined in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), a set of voluntary guidelines designed to minimize food safety hazards associated with agricultural products.
