In Loving Memory of Joseph A. Gauthier

October 9, 1942 - November 4, 2026

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph A. Gauthier, who passed away peacefully on November 4, 2026, at the age of 84, surrounded by his loving family.

Joseph, affectionately known as "Joe," was born on October 9, 1942, to the late Adolphus and Erdine(Grant) Gauthier.

After leaving school, Joe proudly entered the United States Navy, where he served his country for three years before receiving an honorable discharge.

Joe met his soulmate, Sharon A. Derouchie, and the two were united in marriage on May 29, 1965, at Sacred Heart Church in Massena, New York. Together, they shared 54 wonderful years of marriage until Sharon's passing on September 19, 2019.

Throughout his life, Joe was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. He operated Joe's Atlantic gas station in Massena. He then worked at Alcoa until 1974 where he then became the caretaker of Calvary Cemetery, a position he held with pride until his retirement in 2012.

Joe and Sharon also founded Golden Memorials, a monument business that became an important part of their family's legacy. Together, they built a business that they passed down to their children.

Joe was a talented craftsman and mechanic who had an incredible ability to design, build, and repair just about anything. If something was broken, all you had to do was give it to Joe, and he would find a way to fix it. His ingenuity, hardworking nature, and willingness to lend a helping hand will always be remembered.

Above all else, Joe was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his loving children, Jodi (Jeff) White, Lyette (Kyle) Taillon, and Chad (Michelle) Gauthier and his chosen son, James Hartford.

Joe was a proud and loving grandfather to Ryan (Samantha) White, Stephanie (Bryan)Weisheit , Chelsea (Jordan) Foote, Courtney Ashley and fiancé Seth Brown, Taylor Gauthier, and fiancé Samantha Richards, Caitlin Ashley, Bailee Gauthier, and partner Brian Draper.

His legacy will continue through his 11 cherished great-grandchildren: Jax, Xavier, Murphy, Louella, Theodore , Cecilia, Issaac, Maverick, Eric, Lachlan, and Stella.

He is also survived by his two sisters, Mollie (Pat) Stark and Margaret Gauthier.

Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sharon; his daughter, Darcie Ashley; his sister, Tony Monroe; and his brother, James Gauthier.

Joe was a familiar face throughout St. Lawrence County and rarely passed up an opportunity to visit a local diner. Of all the diners he enjoyed, the Via Main held a special place as one of his favorite stops.

Joe loved spending time outdoors. Whether he was mowing lawns, shooting, or enjoying stock car racing in his younger years, he always found something to keep himself busy. More importantly, he took great pride in making sure his family and friends were cared for.

Joe was the kind of man who showed his love through his actions. He was always willing to help, fix what was broken, or simply be there when someone needed him. His kindness, determination, and love for his family will leave a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to have known him.

Funeral Arrangements;

In accordance with Joe's wishes, there will be no calling hours.

A private graveside service for family and close friends will be held on November 22, 2026, at Jenkins cemetery in Winthrop.

Following the service, a Celebration of Life at the American Legion in Winthrop will be held and will be open to all who wish to gather, share memories, and honor Joe's life.

Though Joe may no longer be with us, his legacy lives on through the family he loved, the businesses he built, the countless things he created and repaired, and the many lives he touched along the way.

He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Rest in peace Joe. You will be missed more than words can express.
