CANTON - James L. Hance, 59, of Canton passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 15, 2024 at the Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, Plattsburgh.

Born January 25, 1965 in Ogdensburg, James lived a life of dedication and service. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy from 1983 until 1995, retiring with honor.

It was during his time in the service that James met and married the love of his life Leann Demeter on September 22, 1993, while stationed in Illinois. Their bond, forged through years of love and commitment would span 30 beautiful years.

After his military service, James continued his life of service to others. He and Lea settled in Theresa, where James became a vital part of the community. A member of the Theresa Fire Department, James gave his time and energy selflessly. He also served as Town Justice, guiding with fairness and wisdom, before the couple later moved to the Canton/DeKalb area.

There, James continued his passion for serving others as a member of the DeKalb Fire Department. His commitment extended to his deep involvement in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), where he was a lifetime member, forever honoring the bonds of brotherhood formed through his military service.

James was deeply loved and leaves behind his beloved wife, Lea and their children, Robert (Jamie) Hance, David Hance (Amber Hernandez), Michelle (Tony) Demeter and Thomas (Kristin) Demeter. He was beloved Papa to Hailey and Samantha Flanagan, Riley, Kylie and Aubrey Demeter, and Miles and Margaret (Maggie) Hance.

A man of integrity, compassion, and quiet strength, James touched the lives of many. He will be remembered not only for his service but for his deep love he had for his family and community Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the O’Leary Funeral Home, Canton.
