Is it America first or Earth first?

There’s a lot of buzz nowadays about making America first.  And many think the way to do that is to put up a big wall around the country, both literally along the border with Mexico and figuratively in the form of sky-high tariffs.
But what about greenhouse gasses? How do we prevent them from getting into our country?  Are you aware that China produced 26% of all greenhouse gas emissions last year? The US is number two with a paltry 12% followed by India with 7%. Source: World Resources Institute.

How do you get the Chinese to reduce their emissions if we’re not talking to them? Same for India. Climate change is a worldwide problem that requires world wide action.  More than anything else, climate change tells us we must all act together, or we will surely drown separately, or starve, or die of heat exhaustion.

China now has the second largest population in the world. India has surpassed China with 1.48 billion people.  When India reaches China’s level of development, their GHG emissions will also surpass China’s.
So let’s forget all of this saber rattling and chest pounding. We are in a race to save ourselves from climate disaster. If China has better electric car technology than we do, let’s license it from them. Let them teach US car companies how to do what they’ve done so well: make affordable electric cars. Also cheap solar panels and solar heaters. We all have to start pulling on the oars in the same direction.
Right here in Canton we have one of the very few food scrap drop off sites in the North Country. And it's free! Do you compost? If not, maybe it’s time you did. Charity begins at home. Food scraps that end up in the landfill breakdown into methane, a climate gas 80 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. The drop off site is on Lincoln Street just before Bend In The River park.
If you have questions about how to compost, send an email to nococompost@gmail.com.
If you want a sympathetic ear to listen to your earth concerns, we are sharing EARTH-Friendly concerns and ideas on a weekly conference call on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m.
