COLTON — A free, 7-mile community hike Nov. 7 will explore the waterfalls, rock formations and industrial history of Stone Valley along the Raquette River.
Dana Chudzinski of the Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club will lead the volunteer-led hike, which will follow the full Stone Valley loop, traveling downstream along the river’s west bank and returning upstream along the east bank.
The route passes waterfalls, rapids, rocky gorges and bedrock formations shaped by the river over thousands of years. The exposed rock includes part of the Carthage-Colton Shear Zone, an ancient geological boundary formed more than a billion years ago.
The hike is open to the public, and Adirondack Mountain Club membership and previous hiking experience are not required. Beginners comfortable with the distance are welcome.
The Laurentian Chapter organizes free, volunteer-led hikes and other outdoor activities throughout the year.
