MASSENA -- One person has died following a structure fire in the village of Massena.
Massena Volunteer Fire Chiefs confirmed in a statement this morning that a structure fire at 64 Franklin Street led to one fatality after crews arrived to combat a second floor fire.
The Chiefs said crews located a victim just inside the front door upon arrival, allowing them to remove the victim and begin attempting life saving measures.
Fire crews conducted a further search of the structure while knocking down the blaze but found no one else inside.
"Details regarding the victim will not be released at this time, pending identification and notification of family members. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the victim's family and all those affected by this tragedy," they wrote.
Crews from Massena Volunteer Fire were assisted with mutual aid agencies, including Massena Rescue Squad, Louisville Fire Department, Norfolk Fire Department, Massena Police, the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team and St. Lawrence County Coroner.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the St. Lawrence County Fire Investigation Team.
