Set against the backdrop of the 1993 Nigerian Presidential election (the first since a coup a decade earlier), My Father’s Shadow is the first Nigerian film to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s Official Selection. The film follows two brothers who are witness to the trials and tribulations of working class life in Lagos as they accompany their father around the city for a day. Writing for Empire Magazine, John Nugent praised the film, saying, “[My Father’s Shadow is] a hugely impressive debut.
