To the residents of Ogdensburg and the surrounding communities:
Like many of you, I am deeply concerned about the uncertainty surrounding the future of Claxton-Hepburn Hospital.
This hospital has long been a cornerstone of our community, providing essential healthcare services to individuals and families throughout the greater Ogdensburg area. Access to quality healthcare close to home is something we all depend on, and it is vital that we do everything possible to preserve and strengthen that access for current and future generations.
With that goal in mind, I would like to offer an idea for community discussion and consideration.
I believe the creation of an independent nonprofit organization, such as a 501(c)(3) foundation, could help preserve, protect, and advance healthcare services in our region.
Such an organization could serve as a community-driven resource dedicated to supporting our local hospital and advocating for the healthcare needs of our residents.
This is an appeal to everyone who values having quality healthcare available close to home.
One possible approach could be a voluntary contribution of $20 per month from community members who are able and willing to support the effort. The organization would operate independently, with decisions guided by a board elected directly by its supporting members.
After an initial organizational period of six months to one year, members would have the opportunity to elect an eight-person board of directors. This board would oversee decisions regarding financial support, advocacy efforts, and community healthcare initiatives. Board members could serve two-year terms, with regular elections held to ensure accountability and community representation.
Transparency would be a fundamental principle of the organization. Annual audits would be made publicly available, and bylaws and a governing constitution would be established to provide structure, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
I recognize that this proposal is only a starting point. It is intended to spark conversation, encourage public engagement, and explore ways our community can come together to support an issue that affects us all. Protecting access to healthcare is not just a hospital issue; it is a community issue.
I encourage residents, local leaders, healthcare advocates, and elected officials to join this discussion. I respectfully ask the Ogdensburg City Council and the St. Lawrence County
Board to publicly support the exploration of ideas and initiatives that help ensure the long-term viability of healthcare services in our community.
Saving and strengthening local healthcare will require effort, collaboration, and commitment from all of us. I hope you will consider becoming involved in this important conversation.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
