Canton Goldenaires award scholarships

CANTON – At the May meeting of the Goldenaires barbershop chorus, the “Singing Valentines” award selection committee selected this year’s scholarship winners.

They are Hannah Richards from St. Lawrence Central School in Brasher Falls, Caleb Froats and Cole Odendahl from Madrid-Waddington Central; and Grace Austin from Potsdam Central School.

Each award winner will receive $400 at their school’s senior dinner or graduation. These awards have been made for the past 20 years as a result of the Goldenaires’ Valentines Day Singing Valentines fundraiser.

Even though the chorus has not gone out to deliver “Singing Valentines” over the past few years due to COVID, they have still been able to distribute nine awards of $400 each.

Each award recognizes the senior student’s vocal/instrumental participation and contributions to his or her school community and community at large with the hope they will continue to contribute throughout their life.

The committee also announced that each 2022 winner will receive a one year “honorary” membership to the Goldenaires.

The Goldenaires also discussed some sing outs and engagements for the summer. The chorus has not sang for almost two years but we are looking forward to the Dairy Princess Parade on Saturday, June 4. They will be singing at the Remington Museum on Aug. 12 from 4:30 to 7 p.m., performing at the DeKalb Museum on Aug. 20 at 1:30 p.m., and the Power and Equipment Museum in Madrid Sept. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Goldenaires are looking for new members. If you are 18 years or older and enjoy singing, check out the Goldenaires barbershop chorus.

They meet at the Sportsman Club on the Nickerson Road just outside Canton on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. for two hours. If interested, Ben Budelmann at 315-212-2476.
