AKWESASNE — The Akwesasne Jr. Mavericks Selects hockey team won the Niagara Falls Summer Showdown AA Championship last weekend
The team played four Round Robin games culminating in a 3-2 shootout win in the championship game against the Buffalo Stampede on Sunday.
Player of the game went to Donovan Kozilsky for shutting out both shooters in the shootout as Cam Conners and Lincoln Ashline sunk their shots. Conners also scored a hat trick.
The Mavericks tied 0-0 against the Erie Junior Otters and lost to the Buffalo Stampede 2-1 on Friday.
But the team came back Saturday with a 5-3 win against the Caz Chiefs and a 3-0 win against Battery Hockey Academy.
In the championship game against the Buffalo Stampede on Sunday, the game ended 2-2 after 3 periods. They then played a 4v4 5-minute overtime period with no score. They then went to a 3-man shootout.
The Mavs scored, the Stampede shot was blocked, Mavs scored, and the Stampede shot was blocked again, ending the game.
Players on the team were all born in 2013. Players come from the Massena, Brasher and Malone areas, as well as Akwesasne.
