Abbé Piquet landing thank you

To the Editor:

June 1, 2024, marked the 275th anniversary of the landing of Abbé Piquet at the confluence of the Oswegatchie and St. Lawrence Rivers. This was to become the beginning of the future city of Ogdensburg, New York.

The memorial reenactment of the landing which the Fort La Presentation Association was proud to present was only possible by the Fort Association members, French and Indian War reenactors, our City and State Representatives and members of the community.

Proclamations were received by the Association from Mayor Tooley, Ogdensburg City Mayor, State Assemblyman Scott Gray, and State Senator Mark Walczyk. Each expresses the importance of preserving and remembering the history of not only Ogdensburg, but of St. Lawrence County itself. Julie Madlin, Ogdensburg City Historian, and President of the Ogdensburg City Museum gave a history of the landing of Piquet, as well as the reasons for choosing this location along the St. Lawrence River.

Our thanks and appreciation are extended to St. Lawrence County Legislator James Reagen of Ogdensburg for being our emcee and Bishop Terry LaValley for his prayers and blessing.  Both gentlemen have been strong supporters of the Fort Association.

Refreshments were provided by the Price Chopper Supermarket.

The ability to provide opportunities to the public for learning our history would not be possible, if not for the many supporters, sponsors, our board members, and volunteers who contribute time, energy, funds and encouragement to the Association for the Abbe Piquet Walking Trail, and the constant improvement of the Fort Property.

The Association is constantly in search of Grants and Funding to further our goals. Grants are not free money.  Grants require detailed applications, and many times require matching funds or other stipulations.

We thank all  who support our efforts, the Association is appreciative.
