North Country This Week
CANTON — St. Lawrence County students and staff will get an additional holiday off, as Junteenth will be observed.
Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the end of slavery, is now an official public holiday in New York. Last fall, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law that designates Juneteenth, which also celebrates Black and African American freedom and achievements, as a state holiday.
The news was announced Thursday at Canton Central’s school board meeting.
Canton Central Superintendent Ron Burke said the addition of the holiday will allow teachers to provide “valuable instruction” to their students.
Junteenth is observed on June 19.
