CANTON -- Despite pandemic-related shutdowns and workforce reductions, the St. Lawrence County Highway Department has managed a healthy slate of road and bridge projects.

County Highway Superintendent Don Chambers gave a department update to the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators Finance Committee during their Monday, Aug. 24 meeting.

Chambers read a list of several dozen culvert, paving and bridge projects his department has either started or finished, and added that there are “more than 70” smaller culvert projects measuring four feet and under.

“We have made significant progress,” Chambers told the board. “My office and staff worked diligently through this time. I’m very pleased with the situation myself.”

“Based on COVID and what you just read off, that’s truly amazing. Unbelievable,” Legislator Dave Forsythe, R-Lisbon, said after the superintendent read off the list.

Finished paving projects include County Route 11 in Depeyster, County Route 25 in Russell, county routes 14 and 15 in Canton and county routes 10 and 28 in Lisbon. He expects paving to soon start on County Route 49 in Norfolk, County Route 55 in Brasher, County Route 27 in Clare and Pierrepont and County Route 24 in Fowler.

Chambers said the Talcville Bridge in Edwards is slated for construction this year. Bridge projects he expects to go into design this year or early next year include Jones Road in Parishville, Halfway House Road in Waddington, Skate Creek in Fine, Lacomb Road in Norfolk and Dutton Road in Russell.

He said large culvert projects are finished in Norfolk, Louisville, Stockholm, Lisbon and Canton with one under construction in Helena.
