Police presence increased at local schools following threats of violence at North Country schools

Local law enforcement is aware of threats of violence toward North Country school in recent days.

Reports of planned school shootings were circulated online, but law enforcement says there was no credible threat.

“We are aware of the threat made towards Gouverneur School and want to assure our community that this matter has been thoroughly investigated,” St. Lawrence County sheriff’s deputies said in an online statement. “The Gouverneur Police Department has conducted a comprehensive investigation and determined that there was no credible threat.”

A second, similar threat was made toward Malone school district. The incident is allegedly a hoax. Several threats of school violence took place often last year as well all over the country, including locally.

"We want to reiterate that we have zero tolerance for any threats of violence toward our schools. The safety of our students, staff, and community remains our top priority, the sheriff's office said. "We appreciate the swift work of the Gouverneur Police Department and the cooperation of school officials. As always, we encourage anyone with further information or concerns to contact law enforcement."
