SOAR gears up for fall slate of classes, courses

POTSDAM – The local SOAR organization’s Fall 2022 courses designed for life-long learners will start Sept. 5 and members of the organization still have a chance to register for the remaining open classes.

Members who have registered (and those who plan to register) for the fall program are asked to check the website at soarnorthcountry.org for a list of courses that are still open.

The course booklet, registration form and associated documents are available on the website.

Registration will remain open while there are openings in the proffered classes.

People may also sign up for or add courses by going to the SOAR office during office hours or by calling the office at 315-267-2690.

Those dropping a course need to call the office with that request; there are waiting lists.

Fifteen classes are closed. The semester begins the week of Sept. 5.

This Fall, SOAR brought back courses popular before COVID shut the organization down in the spring of 2020 and is offering a variety of participation courses such as a theater course that will take participants through the whole process of staging a play. (Thank you to the SUNY Potsdam Art and Theatre departments!) Other options include the sciences, the arts, criminal justice, literature, travel, history and more.

SOAR charges a membership fee of $75 in the fall, which covers the current semester as well as the spring semester.

In addition to attending classes, membership entitles participants to a year of campus parking, library privileges and use of Maxcy Hall facilities, all on the SUNY Potsdam campus, and parking on the SLU campus during classes held on that campus.

SOAR continues to follow vaccination and mask wearing rules mandated by our host colleges.

Currently, proof of two Pfizer/Moderna vaccinations or one J&J shot is required prior to entering a first class.

Those who are returning to classes for the first time since COVID ended the Spring 2020 semester must show proof of vaccination.

There are no exceptions.

The wearing of masks is optional.

However, this can change at any time.

Those who proved vaccination status last semester are good to go this fall.

The SOAR office, located in Room 382 in the Van Housen Ext. building on Potsdam’s campus, is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Contact the office by email (soar@potsdam.edu) or by phone (315-267-2690) for more information.

All changes to courses, such as cancellations, time or room changes, will be posted on SOAR’s website.
