HEUVELTON -- A Labor Day weekend filled with festivities kicks off Friday evening, beginning with the Cross Country band playing at AmVets post 1997.

“This is a special event for the community. The sense of commitment from the community is wonderful and it’s the community’s involvement that makes this truly special,” said Mayor Barb Lashua.

Lashua went on to say that the committee responsible for organizing the event has done a great job but it’s the community support that makes it so unique. “We have people running a lot of events and they’re not even on the committee. The baby contest, the big wheel race, the quilt show; they’re all volunteers organized and run,” she said.

Lashua is excited and hopeful the event will be a success this year, but urges residents to be mindful of each other’s safety. “We’re excited to welcome people back but please be safe and try to follow health and safety guidelines. We want everyone to have fun and be safe while doing so,” she said.

The list of events for Saturday are as follows:

•Fishing derby at the boat launch (7 -11 a.m.)
