GOUVERNEUR -- A family tried to put out a fire that eventually destroyed their home Monday night, according to Gouverneur fire officials.

Firefighters responded around 10:40 p.m. to a reported structure fire on County Route 22 in Fowler.

The house was only accessible by a footpath and was approximately 600 feet off the road, fire officials said.

Firefighters reportedly stretched 750 feet of hose to the structure, containing the blaze to the building and stopping it from spreading throughout the woods.

Officials said the family tried to place the fire under control for 30 minutes without calling the fire department.

A neighbor reportedly saw the fire and reported it to 911.

The building is reported as a total loss.

"Calling 911 is recommended for any fire. Even if you think you have it out, you are not bothering a fire department to make sure your family and home will be safe from fire," fire officials said. "We can offer resources as in thermal imaging cameras and other specialized equipment to make sure it's safe to stay in the home."
